This category also includes wines with truly outstanding value for money.

Serbian rosés are becoming ever more elegant and are made in line with modern trends – gastronomic, fresh wines with good balance and clear varietal character. And this category also includes wines with truly outstanding value for money.

1. Roze 100 žena 2021, Vinarija 100 žena, Niš region

A very important, in every way remarkable and globally unique project – a women's winegrowing cooperative – was started right here in Serbia. And yes, the owners really are all women, they really are entrepreneurs, and their story is a true cooperative in which the shares are real and decisions are genuinely made together, in the vineyard, in the winery and on the market. In their very first vintage they produced a striking wine: a rosé from Merlot, for now their only variety in the vineyards. The sole aim of bringing women together in a winemaking cluster was to produce wine of the highest quality – and not only rosé, so next year we can expect their new wines, this time reds as well.

As for the public and the market, they cleared the high bar with ease in their first year. From the Vele Polje vineyard in the Niš wine region, a vineyard of more than 30 hectares, a rosé with a striking and clear name (what else?) – 100 žena – appeared on wine lists and wine-shop shelves in early spring. Seductive and elegant, it carries the recognisable warmth of the South, but also the refined, silky character of Merlot, with a solid fruit expression that – quite as expected – shows handfuls of ripe strawberries, cherry and small red fruit. On the palate this is a rosé of solid structure, balanced and rounded. An excellent food wine that is just as pleasing as an aperitif or an all-day companion in good company. Or rather, it was – because it has long been sold out. The women have won, and we are waiting for the new vintage! 87/100

3. Vertiz Rose 2021, Vinarija Vertiz, Levač

A new wine, but a familiar story and a recognisable style: a delicately coloured and in every way refined rosé from Pinot Noir. It opens with a fine note of ripe redcurrants and strawberry, then develops towards citrus and a discreet floral tone. Rounded on the palate, with supple acidity and a finish full of red berries. 88/100

4. Lex Rose 2021, Vinarija Trivanović, Fruška Gora

It started last year and continued this year, even better! A rosé from Shiraz that seems made to make us rethink our attitude both to Shiraz and to rosé. Truly rich, fruity, peppery and entirely its own. Pomegranate juice, redcurrants, raspberries, watermelon, leaves, spices and floral notes. On the tongue it simply dances, caresses and tingles. 89/100

5. Rose Pinot Noir 2021, Vinarija Džervin, Timok region

It is nothing unusual for Džervin to surprise with an exceptional wine at a more than reasonable price. So this juicy, lavishly fruity rosé is no surprise either. Ripe wild strawberries and cherries, a luscious, juicy and seductive body, persistence and structure. Can you get more for 800 dinars? You cannot! We need more wines like this on the market. 88/100

Ivica Vukelić: Džervin steps up a level

After 12 failed privatisations and a near slide into oblivion, the former wine giant Džervin found a new owner in agronomist Ivica Vukelić, a native of Vojvodina. No surprise, then, that Džervin's Grašac has caught the public's attention, that the Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 won platinum at the Open Balkan Wine Trophy 2023, and that the Sauvignon and the rest of the range are impatiently awaiting even higher honours.

Podrum Džervin 1927 wins Grand Gold at the Open Balkan Wine Trophy

At the prestigious Wine Vision by Open Balkan fair, Podrum Džervin 1927 won no fewer than 10 medals, including Grand Gold for the Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 with 95 points. This success at an international competition judged by top wine experts confirms the growing quality and ambition of the Knjaževac winery, which is attracting more and more attention from wine lovers at home and abroad.

Džervin strikes gold in Vienna

At the prestigious AWC Vienna competition, Džervin won its first gold outside the Balkans, for the premium Riesling 2021. This fresh, vibrant label comes from a winery quietly building a reputation for outstanding value, with organic-leaning practices and notable successes for earlier labels such as the Sauvignon Blanc and the Rose Pinot.
